Sharing Knowlege, Serving the Community

The Chevy Chase Historical Society (CCHS) was founded in 1981 to discover, record and preserve the history of one of America's first streetcar suburbs -- the Maryland and Washington neighborhoods known as Chevy Chase.

CCHS is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization of approximately 300 members.  The Society provides resources for historical research and sponsors a variety of activities to promote public interest in, and knowledge of, Chevy Chase's history.  Its collection resides in the Society's permanent Archive and Research Center on the lower level of the Chevy Chase Library at 8005 Connecticut Avenue.  CCHS volunteers preserve and catalog the collection of maps, books, documents, artifacts, clippings and photographs, using the guidelines of the American Association for State and Local History.

A major capital campaign that concluded in 2005 raised more than $370,000, enabling CCHS to establish the Archive and Research Center and to fund ongoing programs and operations.  Production of a broadcast-quality documentary on the history of Chevy Chase and hosting a Heritage Fair for the community have been special projects during 2006, the Society's 25th anniversary year.
