RESEARCH YOUR HISTORY
About Our Collection
CCHS has been collecting material relevant to the area for more than 25 years, and our collections represent a unique resource for scholars, students, and residents of Chevy Chase. We are inspired by the knowledge that Chevy Chase is one of the earliest planned suburbs in the United States and maintains the imprint of the original plan. It is also one of the few (and perhaps the only) residential areas in the nation in which the original developer, the Chevy Chase Land Company, has maintained a presence throughout more than 100 years of growth up to the present time.
The CCHS collection is continually growing. Much of our material has come from the generous donations of individuals. Our archive includes (numbers are approximate, due to frequent additions to the collections):
-
Thousands of documents, many of them original, chronicling the history of Chevy Chase
-
More than 2,500 photographs
-
More than 300 maps, several of which are antique and rare
-
-
-
Numerous books, pamphlets, and magazines
-
More than 20 exhibits
-
Videotapes and DVDs of historic interest
This collection represents the most comprehensive record of the founding and development of Chevy Chase, and includes materials from the National Archives, the National Geographic Society, Montgomery County Historical Society, the Chevy Chase Club, the Chevy Chase Land Company, the Historical Society of Washington, DC and private holdings.
CCHS documents include articles and pamphlets containing memoirs of residents from the earliest days of Chevy Chase until the present, and our oral histories preserve the history of early Chevy Chase in the words of the residents themselves. We are indebted to the Land Company for copies of many of their maps, photographs, business papers, and other historical documents. We also are grateful for the generosity of Robert A. Truax, noted local historian, who has allowed us to copy all of his photographs that relate to Chevy Chase.
