RESEARCH YOUR HISTORY

Collection Policy

The Chevy Chase Historical Society collects and conserves printed books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, prints and other works of art, and ephemera that relate to the land originally purchased and developed by the Chevy Chase Land Company, including: 

  • Sections 1 & 2 (The Village of Chevy Chase)
  • The Village of Chevy Chase, Section 3
  • Section 4 (Town of Chevy Chase)
  • The Village of Chevy Chase, Section 5
  • The Village of Martins’ Additions (Temporarily part of Chevy Chase Village between 1911-1916) 
  • The portion of Chevy Chase, D.C. along the Connecticut Ave. corridor between Western Avenue and Livingston, as it was the commercial and social heart of Chevy Chase.  

The scope of CCHS’ collection also encompasses the other geographical boundaries:  

  • North up to and along Jones Bridge Road
  • South up to and along Western Avenue
  • East along Brookville Road
  • West along Wisconsin Avenue from Western Ave. to Bradley Lane, West Ave/46th St/47th Street from Bradley Lane to the Railroad Line, along the Railroad Line to East/West Highway, along East/West Highway to the west side of Columbia County Club, north along the west side of Columbia Country Club to Jones Bridge Road.            

Accessions to the collection of the Chevy Chase Historical Society are made in the interest of promoting CCHS’s mission to safeguard, preserve and provide access to the history of Chevy Chase as well as the social, cultural, and political history of the above regions from 1888 to the present.  We also accession items of interest relevant to the land of Chevy Chase prior to its development by the land company. Objects collected by CCHS fall under one of the following: 

  • Primary Collection: This collection consists of photographs, portraits, maps, documents, and artifacts that meet the above stated criteria.  
  • Secondary Collection: Items placed in the Secondary Collection might include duplicates of items in the Primary Collection in excess of two copies; newspaper clippings; student papers/theses; pamphlets; brochures; and other items of general interest to the Chevy Chase area.
